Mid South Extrusion Inc. is spending nearly $5 million to add a polyethylene film production line at the company's facility in Monroe, La.

A $4.9 million investment to fund a 12th blown film line will add eight new jobs to go along with an existing workforce of 170, according to Louisiana Economic Development.

"Along with increasing our production capacity, this investment allows us to continue to target new markets and capitalize on our momentum in the food packaging sector," said Mark Kent Anderson, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Mid South Extrusion, in a statement.

"Plastics is an industry that is in high demand due to the industry's commitment to growth, innovation and sustainability," he said.

Mid South Extrusion expects the new line to be operating by the end of this year.

Louisiana is providing $170,000 for the project from the state's Retention and Modernization Program. The company also expects to apply to the state Enterprise Zone and Industrial Tax Exemption programs.

"We love our state and community, and knowing that we have the support of our local and state officials makes reinvestment and growth in Louisiana an easy decision," Anderson said in his statement.

Family-owned Mid South Extrusion was founded in 1986 in 17,000 square feet of space with four employees. The company now operates out of 215,000 square feet. Key markets include agriculture, consumer products, food and beverage, industrial and electronic commerce.

Mid South is the No. 55 in the latest Plastics News ranking of film and sheet producers in North America with sales of $126 million in 2020.
